    Hello,

I am creating a number of wordpress.org websites locally using Xampp (and creating a back end database with php myadmin).

I am wanting to create wordpress websites for clients professionally. Is it wise to create regular back-ups of local wordpress websites to save creations over time? If so, what is the process of backing a locally hosted website to save creations of a website in case it gets lost? Would it be saved as a zip file? What is the process of then restoring a saved local wordpress website? Have searched everywhere for this but cant find any step by step process. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

  • Take a look at this article first:

    WordPress Backups

Then I would specifically recommend using existing backup systems for backups on local systems – independent of WordPress, programmes that may simply back up the directory + database. You can of course also use one of the many backup plugins: https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/backup/

We use Duplicator for backups and currently we manually download the backups from the server (free version). We’re starting to test using Duplicator Pro (paid) to do automatic backups to Dropbox. That might be a path to consider.

Of course, manually you can just zip up your whole wp directory and use phpmyadmin to export your db. That’s how we used to backup and restore when I first started.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have now started using the Duplicator plugin as suggested-works brilliantly. Thanks:)
